In my DallasNews Corporation column today, I explore how somehow Clayton Kershaw, a graduate of Highland Park High School and the best pitcher of his generation, is more widely respected for his work in the community than on the mound.
I could not find a community leader to discuss baseball. The winner of the Roberto Clemente Award by MLB really is that good off the mound.
I can make a case he's the greatest athlete from Dallas ever--with all due respect to Doak Walker, Tim Brown, Davey O'Brien, Michael Johnson, Larry Johnson, and Matthew Stafford. Maybe fellow Scot Scottie Scheffler will pass him someday.
Meg Boyd, the Executive Director of the HIGHLAND PARK ISD EDUCATION FOUNDATION, summed it up best: "Kershaw leads by example in a way that commands quiet respect. His leadership is based on action, not words, and we are proud to call him a Highland Park Scot."
I know I am.
